Greenhouse is a Canadian beverage company seeking to make healthy and sustainable the new normal.
It all started at 5 Macpherson.
We launched Greenhouse in a former coach house on Toronto's Macpherson Avenue. It was our first shop by day, and our first production facility by night. Our opening day, January 8th, 2014, was a bone-chilling winter Wednesday, and we were selling a product that was all but unheard-of in Toronto at the time. Worse, it had "cold" right in the name. We weren’t optimistic that anyone would show up.
A turnkey way to stay healthy.
We had first tasted cold-pressed juice in our travels, and quickly embraced it as a habit. Drinking a big bottle of vegetables on the way to work was an efficient way to soak up the benefits of large quantities of plants, keeping our energy up and our immune systems strong. But back in Toronto, we couldn't find what we were looking for: organic juice bottled in glass that balanced deliciousness with function in every sip. We decided to make our own.
The accidental factory.
Much to our surprise, a number of people did trek through the cold to visit us on that first day, not all of whom were our parents. In fact, so many brave souls ventured in that we sold an entire night’s worth of juice in an hour. For the next six months the house was an accidental factory, bustling for 22 hours a day, seven days a week, and we still couldn't meet demand. As we watched a community form around organic plants in reusable glass bottles, our mission took shape. We set ourselves the task of offering widespread, sustainable access to plant-based nutrition and wellness of the highest quality. That meant building a proper plant, and making a whole lot of juice.
Four years, six plant-based beverage categories, ten shops, and a lot of innovation later, we opened a state-of-the-art, Safe Quality Foods (SQF)-, organic-, and kosher-certified plant. As of the fall of 2019, you can find our organic, plant-based, glass-bottled beverages in grocery stores across Canada. We're still a scrappy start-up, but every day we're getting closer to our mission. Meanwhile, the little house on Macpherson, which inspired our logo and our name, remains our flagship store -- and now it gets a good night’s sleep.
Organic + Non-GMO
We make our beverages from organic ingredients: they are non-GMO and grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, for healthy juices and a healthy planet. We prioritize produce from local farms as well as "seconds," or the vegetables and fruits that don't win beauty contests (but taste great). Our leftover fibre is used to make dog biscuits, sustainable pizza crusts, and more.
All of our products are plant-based, meaning that they’re made from plants. Just plants. Lots of plants. Placing plants at the centre of our plates, bowls, and glasses is a simple, powerful, and delicious way to improve our health, and that of our environment.
Made with Love in Canada
When we say "made with love," we mean that we are very intentional about our processes and ingredients: health and sustainability always come first. A vertically integrated company, we make our beverages in our Toronto-area plant, which is SQF- and HACCP-certified. Our juices are cold-pressed and light filtered to protect nutrients. We don't use additives, preservatives, stabilizers, or gums. We don't rely on added sugars or sweet fruits to make our juices taste great.
